Low-risk method for breast cancer screening

Low-risk method for breast cancer screening

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) established the Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care aims to develop clinical practice guidelines that support primary care providers in delivering preventive health care [1]. In their latest update on the Breast cancer issue, they provided recommendations on screening for breast cancer in women 40-74 years of age who are not at increased risk [2]. The following figure shows for people aged 40-49, NOT screening by mammography is recommended because the balance of benefits and harms is less favorable.

This figure shows for people aged 40-49, NOT screening by mammography is recommended because the balance of benefits and harms is less favorable.

Based on World Life Expectancy [3], the population of Canadian people aged 40-49 is very high as shown in the following Canada population pyramid. Therefore, we don’t have any screening method for this large sub-population considering the high risk of mammography.

A low-risk method with high specificity will help screen people >50 years. Liquid biopsy can be one of the choices.
